Classification of Calcium
Calcium is classified as an alkaline earth metal. It is positioned in Group 2 of the periodic table, a characteristic indicating its metallic nature.
Physical Appearance and State
Color
Elemental calcium exhibits a silvery-white, lustrous appearance when its surface is fresh and unexposed. However, upon contact with air, it quickly reacts to form a thin layer of calcium oxide, which results in a dull, greyish appearance.
Texture
Calcium is a relatively soft metal. It possesses a texture that allows it to be cut with a knife, indicating its malleability and comparatively lower hardness compared to many other metals.
State at Room Temperature
At standard room temperature, which is typically considered around 25 °C, calcium exists in a solid state. Calcium is widely found in various mineral forms across India, such as limestone (calcium carbonate), which is extensively quarried in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh for construction materials and cement production.
Thermal Properties
Melting Point
The melting point of calcium is 842 °C. This temperature represents the point at which solid calcium transitions into its liquid state.
Boiling Point
Calcium has a boiling point of 1484 °C. At this temperature, liquid calcium converts into a gaseous state.
