Physical Properties of Lanthanum
Lanthanum (La) is a chemical element with atomic number 57. It is the prototype of the lanthanide series, a group of elements known as rare-earth metals.
Classification
Lanthanum is definitively classified as a metal. It exhibits characteristic metallic properties such as good electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability, and ductility.
Appearance and Texture
At room temperature, pure Lanthanum typically appears as a silvery-white metal. When freshly cut or polished, it has a bright, metallic luster. However, it tarnishes rapidly upon exposure to air, forming a dull, greyish oxide layer. The metal is relatively soft, making it easily cut with a knife. It is also malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires).
State of Matter
At standard room temperature (approximately 25 °C), Lanthanum exists in a solid state.
Melting and Boiling Points
- Melting Point: Lanthanum has a melting point of approximately 920 °C.
- Boiling Point: Its boiling point is approximately 3464 °C.
