Physical Properties of Neon
Neon (Ne) is an element with distinct physical characteristics. It belongs to the group of noble gases in the periodic table.
Classification
Neon is classified as a non-metal. It is part of Group 18, the noble gases, which are known for their inertness and non-metallic properties.
State, Color, and Texture
At standard room temperature and pressure, neon exists as a gas. In its gaseous state, neon is colorless and odorless. As a gas, it does not possess a discernible texture. However, when an electric current is passed through it in a vacuum discharge tube, it emits a brilliant orange-red light. This property is famously utilized in neon signs, which are a common sight in commercial areas across Indian cities, illuminating shop fronts and advertising billboards.
Melting and Boiling Points
Neon has extremely low melting and boiling points, indicative of its gaseous state at typical environmental conditions.

- Boiling Point: Approximately -246.08 °C
These low temperatures mean that neon remains a gas unless subjected to very cold cryogenic conditions.
