Nature of Scandium
Scandium is categorized as a transition metal. It occupies the third group of the periodic table.
Appearance and State at Room Temperature
At standard room temperature (approximately 25 °C), Scandium is found in a solid state. Its typical appearance is a silvery-white metallic luster. Upon prolonged exposure to air, the surface of Scandium can dull and acquire a yellowish or even pinkish hue due to oxidation.
Texture and Mechanical Characteristics
The metal is characterized by its relative softness. It demonstrates ductility, allowing it to be drawn into fine wires, and malleability, meaning it can be shaped into thin sheets without fracturing. These properties contribute to its workability.
Thermal Properties
Scandium possesses specific thermal benchmarks:
- Melting Point: 1541 °C
- Boiling Point: 2836 °C
